When Lori of WildFlour Artisan Bakery reached out to inquire about branding photography for her growing business, I have to admit I was absolutely delighted. I adore shooting lifestyle photography and branding sessions are right up there in that category. I mean, what’s better than spending time with another small business owner and capturing them making and creating their own art in their own space!? I was thrilled! We scheduled her branding session for a few months out and I basically started a countdown to our session.
WildFlour Artisan Bakery is located in St. Paul Indiana. Lori does all of her baking on site in a commercial kitchen she had build on her personal property, and sells her pastries, pies, and breads at a shop in downtown St. Paul on Saturday mornings. She also takes custom cake orders, as well! Our focus for her session was to capture her in action – prepping bread dough, icing custom cakes, piping macarons, rolling pastry dough, and more. Even though I had photos of her kitchen space in advance of our session, I think I muttered an awed ‘ooooohhhh’ as I walked into her well-lit space set out on the gorgeous countryside of Indiana. Just steps from her front door, she spends her days here turning out the most delicate, gorgeous baked goods – each one made with her own special flair.
I’ve always enjoyed photographing people’s hands – especially those who work with their hands. It’s as if our hands hold a big part of our personal journeys and stories in the lines and creases and cuts that adorn them. Plus, culinary arts have always wowed me, and with my own sweet tooth, baked goods have always made me swoon a bit. It’s probably why I always enjoy photographing the cakes at the weddings I shoot. I find the attention to detail and the textures to be so charming. That being said, spending the afternoon watching Lori work was such a treat for me.
If you’re ever out on the Southeast side of Indianapolis on a Saturday morning, I encourage you to stop by the shop on Washington Street. The only catch is, you have to get there early. Lori opens at 7am and by 10am she’s completely sold out. Lucky for you, if you’re planning ahead, she’ll be starting to take preorders on her site soon, so you can be sure to get all of your favorite goodies when you stop by. Thanks for having me Lori!
