This month’s Project Ten theme was hard for me. The word ‘sharp’ has so many different meanings and I’ve spent the last month pondering what I want to portray … sharp objects, sharp photos, sharp contrast, someone who is sharp (i.e. bright, witty, quick on their toes, etc.). I pondered the idea of portraying emotionally painful ‘sharp’ images – yelling, the illusion of vulgarity, hurt and pain, and so on, but for those of you who know my work, that’s not really my style.
Yesterday, there was a short break in the weather we’ve been having. The sun came out, it warmed up above zero, and the snow started to melt… just enough to go play in it. 😉 What you need to know, is that my dog thinks snow (or sand, depending on where we live) is the world’s greatest gift to her. Seriously… she goes NUTS. I had this ‘AH-HAH!’ moment when I realized how SHARP the contrast was in the weather, and we set out for a stroll.
My focus for my images this year is clarity (…. sharpness!) as I’ve got my style down. I’m working on fine-tuning my focus (or intentional lack of focus) in frame. Let me tell you… there’s no better way to practice your focusing techniques than on a snow-frenzied dog… or a small child! For each photo that depicts a blur of a dog, I’ve got another that is crisp and sharp – YAY! For me, it’s about intentional focus, depth of field, motion blur (which sometimes MAKES the photo!), and editing that make an image sharp. We’re not just talking about focus, but we’re talking about what makes an image POP! I tend to lean towards the ‘matte’ edit for any images I display online (but I like more ‘crisp’ edits for personal prints… you never knew, did you!?). For this round, I chose the more classic edit, to enhance the sharpness of these shots.
Looking forward to next month’s Project Ten theme being announced tomorrow! I intend to make decisions early in the month and post my interpretation earlier than normal!
Enjoy! <3
And to give you an idea of just how SHARP (and freezing) this weather has been to us lately, here’s what it looked like today. And yes, it was so sharp today, it hurt.
