There’s nothing I love more than shooting couples who love to laugh together. I remember being so excited for Kate and Cody’s engagement session last year because she had shared with me from the get-go that she wanted as many candid, playful, laughing shots as possible. She told me to go ahead and skip the posed stuff and get right to the goodness. Now, I hear this a lot – families and couples want playful, laughing photos together, but sometimes it doesn’t always happen that way. People are camera shy, the kids aren’t having it, it’s too cold to run and play and spin and everyone only wants to snuggle. So when Kate and Cody showed up to their session and brought made my laughing-couple-photo-dreams all come true, I was elated.
So when I showed up to shoot their dreamy Mavris Arts & Event Center wedding last month, I was more than excited. Kate and Cody saved their first look for their ceremony, which meant a few rounds of speed portraits post-ceremony were saved for their couple portraits. We had planned for some outdoor sunset portraits despite the dropping temps, and when the sun peeked around the city just perfectly as we were sitting down to dinner, we wondered if we’d be able to get them in. We talked with Maddie, Mavris’ all star coordinator and she went downstairs to make some magic happen and when Kate and Cody walked back in a few minutes later, all I could do was shout for joy with my mouth full of food. Turns out, everyone was team sunset portraits (and delayed dinner) – basically a photographer’s dream.
Where am I going with all of this? Here. Sunset portraits. Remember how I was talking about how much Kate loves those real-life portraits? Well, it turns out that Cody had some favorites from our shoot together and wanted to recreate them for their wedding. So if you’re wondering why there are shots of Cody running all over Mavris’ gardens at sunset, now you know. My favorite moment of it all, though, was when the sun was just setting behind them and Kate grabbed Cody for a kiss and it was all so enthuasiastic, I found myself shouting (basically in their faces since I was so close) ‘GET GET IN THERE, KATE!’. I have no shame – and the resulting images are very easily in my top portraits ever taken.
Kate and Cody, thank you for letting me play along with you over this past year. I’ve enjoyed every moment spent together and every bit of planning leading up to those moments. I’m so excited for you to see your gallery in full, but in the meantime, this will to tide you over. Congratulations to you both!
