Indianapolis Family Photographers | Giving Back | Marielle

Now that I live in Indiana, making a point to be with family on holidays is a breeze. And since Mother’s Day has become something of an unofficial tradition for my siblings, mom, and I, this past weekend was spent in Michigan celebrating family, spring, and the kickoff of my spring sessions.

Of course, spring is almost always joined at the hip with constant rainfall. I’m learning that here in Indianapolis, we’re a month ahead of Ann Arbor when it comes to the arrival of spring. Our flowering trees have already puttered out and the vibrant greens are in full effect. That also means we’re mostly done with the constant showers.

Michigan, on the other hand, is just getting started. Which means my shoots scheduled this past weekend became quite the adventure. I started on Friday with Marielle, one of the winners from the Giving Back contest earlier this year.  When I left Saline to head up to Ann Arbor it was raining lightly, but passing quickly. When I arrived to the session, things looked fairly stable… most of the threatening skies were to the south.

Marielle and her mom arrived and we hustled over to where I wanted to start. I shot one test shot… this shot… and it began to drizzle.

We stuck out the drizzle as most people began dashing for their cars. I managed to snag a couple of shots by the water as the wind picked up and then we booked it as the skies opened up, the lightening was flashing, and the thunder was rolling.

We took cover under the overpass while I secretly (and desperately) was hoping that it would pass, the skies would clear, and I’d get lucky with an awesomely colorful sunset and a park without any people.

It didn’t happen. The rains kept on, the storm flashed around us, and so I cranked up the already-high ISO (did I mention it was storming and it may as well have been nighttime with how dark it was!?) and shot a few for fun before heading back to the car and calling it a cancellation.

I don’t regret showing up only to be rained out because our tiny, little mini-shoot was like a practice run of what is yet to come. Looking forward to seeing this girl and getting her in front of my camera again this fall. Stay tuned!
