Sierra reached out to me at the start of December to coordinate a family session for her mom and brother and it all came together as the perfect Christmas gift. It’s my favorite thing about the close of the year (and the close of the photography season) – helping clients gift sessions to their loved ones.
In this case, Sierra was envisioning something simple, but elegant, and was looking at indoor location options for their winter shoot. We talked through a few options, but there was only one spot that seemed to fit every part of the vision, and everything fell into place from there. I’ve shot here many times over the last few years, but this Neidhammer family session marks my first non-wedding (or elopement!) shoot at the venue, and I have to say, the light is as swoon-worthy as ever. I’m excited to be heading back in just a couple of of weeks for another session!
Sierra and Jackson have the sweetest relationship with their mom, Amy. They all showed up excited for our time together and jumped right in with me. Sierra had shared with me in advance that the three of them are very close and their tight bond was immediately apparent as we got settled into the space upstairs at Neidhammer. I knew I would be using some of my normal prompts for some of our candid shots, but we also used some deeper, more personal prompts where they got to share their memories, gratitude, and admiration for one another. I will admit, it may be the first time I found myself behind the camera with tears in my eyes at a family session. Sure, it happens to me at every wedding I shoot, but family sessions don’t often bring that out in me.
To Sierra, Jackson, and Amy – thank you for inviting me to spend this afternoon with you. Thank you for allowing me to capture your family as it is in this moment and for being all-in at your session. There couldn’t have been a better way to kick off the year!
