Last year I was connected with Spectrum Inspired, an organization that connects families with children on the autism spectrum with lifestyle photographers in their area for a chance to document their stories in a collection of beautiful family and lifestyle images. As a teacher who has worked with students of every age and from all walks of life, and as someone who adores lifestyle photography, this organization is a perfect fit for me.
When Kaitlan reached out to schedule a session, her application came across my desk in hopes that I would be local enough to make it happen. As I read through Kaitlan’s story, I was instantly drawn to her. Her voice throughout her application is that of a strong female, a woman who is advocating for her son in every possible way as he learns to navigate this world in his own way. I accepted the session and Kaitlan and I coordinated their session.
Upon meeting Kaitlan and observing her and Landry from behind the lens, my heart melted a little bit. Landry is non-verbal, and while he’s working on his communication skills in therapy, can become frustrated when he cannot get his needs across to those that are helping him. Kaitlan’s nurturing and comforting personality are the perfect pair to Landry’s difficult moments, making them a fleeting moment in time and instantly restoring his inquisitive, adventurous spirit. And while he may not be overly affectionate, he seeks her out in his own way and is instantaneously soothed by her. Kaitlan, you’ve got this and you are absolutely doing it right.
So what does a Spectrum Inspired session look like? Well, for Landry it means time with all of his favorite things: trains, playgrounds and the park, snacks, and puddle jumping! What almost-four-year-old wouldn’t want a session with all of that? We spent time following Landry from place to place watching him indulge in all of his favorite things – including my own personal favorite, some serious puddle time. Have you ever seen this video?! That is exactly what happened in the driveway… just without the dog and with bigger splashes… and I just melted watching the whole thing. This is what it’s all about and I am so thankful to have been invited into this home to document their story.

You have captured the real moments and emotions beautifully!
I love how you captured real life and the bond between a child and his parents. Lovely!
Awesome and emotional capture! Love your work!
I have a background in working with children on the spectrum…. and I love this so much. Days can be long with neurotypical and children with special needs alike – having some special moments captured to illustrate to parents that they are in fact doing a good job and that the magic of childhood is alive in their child – its priceless
LOVE LOVE LOVE. Fellow spectrum momma here, and I would be so thankful to have these.
Everything about the is perfect, Casey. What a wonderful treasure for this sweet family and what an amazing organization that you get to work with. So beautiful.
