I asked this question on the Facbeook page last night, but I’m curious to hear from my blog followers, too! It’s the great debate: clean vs. matte editing. This photo is from an engagement session earlier this year (the link is in Tuesday’s blog)… and their wedding is on Saturday. EEK!
As a photographer, this is something I struggle with. I LOVE the look of matte editing… especially in black and whites! I love the vintage and soft look. Yet I know that a clean edit is ‘technically’ correct – it looks sharper because of the contrast, it ‘pops’, and maintains its vibrancy.
I’ve had long discussions with my husband (and now this week my mom, too!) about these two different styles. I’m curious to hear what your preference is. As photographers, our styles change with time and our clients should experience consistency across our work as well as be excited about the growth and change of your work over time. Right now I’m caught at a cross roads as the majority seem to be familiar with and prefer a clean edit, but my style for the last year and a half has been more matte finish.
Fellow photographers, help me out, what’s your editing style and have you ever thought about giving your client’s an option to choose? Do you think the matte edit will die over time?

Tough decision but clean.
clean!
good debate! I am usually very clean, but every once in awhile an image calls for matte!
Love both but really into matte right now.
I’m usually for a partial matte photo- But for this – because it’s a detail photo with them blurry in the background I LOVE the matte option. It is perfect. Nicely done! Super fun idea for engagements.
I love looking at other photographers who do matt but I’m clean kind a gal
I’m somewhere in between, I love matte but a little less. Love the blog post!
I have different styles depending on the type of session I’m doing. I add a little bit of matte to my newborn sessions but have a clean look for my birth images. If it’s your style and what you love, just go with it! 🙂
