Claudia and Mateo are new to the area having recently moved from Chicago and planning this Indianapolis canal walk family session with them was such a treat. Claudia and I emailed and texted back and forth for a while, trying to find the perfect backdrop for their session. It was like I sent Claudia on a scavenger hunt of the city, checking out new little nooks and crannies of Indy every day, until we settled on her favorite (and one of my favorites, as well). I love shooting along the canal because you get the feel of the big city, but not the hustle and bustle of the more commercial areas. It was the perfect way to welcome them to their new home and spend a gorgeous fall afternoon outside seeing the city sites.

Claudia had told me in advance that Mateo is tall for his age, and while he’s only 3, he’s as tall as some of the 5 and 6 year olds I’ve photographed this year! He’s got the energy to go along with it, too. Claudia told me he had already been outside and running around at daycare that day, but he ran circles around us (literally) all evening. We made a game of if and he ran down-and-backs for the full session, putting in at least twice as much distance as we actually covered. It was impressive!

These two were one of those families that makes my job easy. They’re so playful with each other, and are always laughing together, that it was natural for them to do the same just with me tagging along! Welcome to the area, you two!
