I met these two while they were in town from Michigan earlier this year. Renee is from the area and they’re planning their wedding at the Crowne Plaza for this November. We tried to sneak in their engagement session earlier this year after we met, but things didn’t line up for us and we weren’t able to make it happen. We talked about shooting up in Michigan while I was in town for a wedding last month, but they really wanted to capture the heart of the city in their photos – the city they’d be saying their vows in later this year. So as we wrapped up an entire month of rain, I kept my fingers crossed as Renee and Ken made the drive down for their Indianapolis Canal Walk engagement session. The rains stayed away and we lucked out with beautiful, yet sweltering, weather, but these two grinned and laughed through it all.
We shot at one of my favorite down spots ending with some gorgeous sunset skyline shots of Indy. I always love shooting along the canal walk and am so grateful to have this feature as part of our city. Renee and Ken were troopers through it all (shout out to Renee who managed to make wearing a jean jacket in 90+ degree weather look like a breeze) and made my job a piece of cake. The best part of it all, though, is Renee’s laughter which is 100% contagious. It’s no secret that laughing photos are my absolute favorite and people who laugh with their whole being just warm my soul, so as these two started to get the giggles after getting into the swing of things, my heart just about burst.
Spoiler alert, if you’ve never shot with me then you don’t know what kind of directions I give during my shoot. Things are very seldom ‘still’ during my sessions – I like action and motion and am really striving to capture the moments, looks and glances, and ultimately emotions between my subjects. I ask all sorts of crazy things throughout our time together, sometimes stringing things together to intentionally make them a bit complicated. I ask people to do all sorts of things while walking, knowing full well that it’s hard to get it all, especially on the first go. I’m not really shooting for what I’ve asked for, but rather those in between moments… I’m shooting for the blooper reel. These are the photos where people come to life. These are the photos that Renee and Ken nailed and I cannot help but grin to myself as I write this and look them over again. Looking forward to November already, and not just because I could use a break in this heat! See you all soon!
