As the year comes to a close, we come into one of my favorite seasons of the year. I’m not talking about winter, though I do love a good snow, but the season of winter elopements in Indianapolis. Annie and Karl found me through this winter elopement from two years ago. Annie’s best friend Kat stumbled across that post while helping with planning and it all fell into place from there.

My favorite things about the day? Well, their socks, for one. Annie gifted Karl the socks early that morning before they parted ways for the rest of the day. It was the perfect way for them to include their cats in their celebrations and it was the perfect touch for them. Annie’s dress was absolutely gorgeous – the texture of the detail gave it an incredible pop. Of course, included in this list must be the way Karl can make Annie laugh (which I found out during their elopement engagement session), Annie’s bouquet, Karl fidgeting with his ring post-ceremony, and the fact that they both braved the cold to wrap up our time together outdoors.

I photograph Indiana State House elopements year round, each one falling at a different time of day in a different season. It always amazes me how much the color of the interior changes with the lighting – whether it’s sunny or overcast, whether it’s mid afternoon or sunset and these winter elopements have the most beautiful, rich gold tones. It’s something out of a movie and reminds me of a scene from Beauty and the Beast. This time, though, we were thrown a curveball when we showed up to find the space set up for a conference. We were able to quickly adjust our plans to shoot at the other end of the building, working around the ‘house cleaning’ materials in the background, but I missed the wall of portraits as a backdrop – all those faces staring down on you as you say your vows. 😂
