As far as skyline views of the Indianapolis, this park takes the cake, especially at sunset. It’s a tiny little park on the east side and it sits up on a hill, giving you the best look out onto Indy and all it has to offer. I’ve shot here once before, for another photographer while she was out on maternity leave, but it was a different season and drastically different weather. So when I showed up to shoot this Highland Park engagement session, I will admit, I was a bit unsure as to whether we could fill the time in such a small area with soooo much sun. You see, the sun stays pretty high in the sky in the summer months, until it drops out of view super quickly at sunset (or just before if you have a lot of buildings on your skyline!). The majority of the park is a wide open hill, with no tree cover, something that’s not great for photos, unless it’s overcast.

We talked about zipping off to another nearby location for the start of our session, but this park has a story behind it for Hannah and Nate, so we agreed to stay and find little nooks and crannies to shoot in until the sun lowered enough for us to get out onto the hill. And boy, am I ever glad we did. You see, Nate proposed to Hannah at this park (on the hillside!) and it was sentimental to them to come back here for their engagement session. We’ve even talked about sneaking over here for some quick portraits on their wedding day, since their venue is just a few minutes away! Of course, it was winter when he proposed, so they weren’t there for a sunset, and it certainly wasn’t warm, but it was memorable all the same. This time, Hannah and Nate got to experience sun and warmth as we jetted around stealing little spots of light as the sun went down. They were even up for an extra wardrobe change so we could use Hannah’s dress for some sunset city shots! I cannot wait to celebrate these two in August! Keep an eye out for more of them, then!
