Extended Family Sessions | Large Family Photography in Indianapolis

Each year I get a handful of opportunities to shoot large family groups or extended family sessions and each one I shoot I walk away grinning from ear to ear. I think it’s in my nature to love a bit of chaos because with it comes excitement, energy, and a lot of laughter. It’s kind of like when you photograph a wedding and you get a front row seat to everything that happens that day, except this time, it’s like you’ve become a temporary member of the inner circle of a family and you are completely immersed in their culture, their traditions, and their relationships. It’s not very often that families get a chance to be in the same place at the same time – especially after the kids are grown up, moved out, and have families of their own. So when a family reaches out to me because not only are they all going to be together, but because they want photos, too!? My heart may skip a beat or two and I do a little dance to celebrate. I LOVE extended family sessions!!

All gushing aside for a minute, you may recognize two people from this shoot, and it’s because this is their SECOND large family session this year – it’s like they’re my her0-clients. Courtney and Jared booked a session for each of their families and gifted it to them for the holidays last year. You can see more of their first session here. This session was for Courtney’s side of the family and after a couple of reschedules, it came time for our evening at Ft. Ben (or Fort Harrison for folks not from around here) and in rolled the clouds. We decided to give it a whirl, knowing we may get ‘clouded’ out by the heavy cover and whaddya know… the sun popped out for us at the very end just in time for Christian’s debut. Mother Nature was on our side and was determined to get these girls’ brother in some shots once he was off of work.
