It’s official. I’m leaving photography to become a flower farmer. Kidding, but only sort of. A girl can dream, right? And flower farmers also need to take photos… of flowers, of people among the flower fields, you get the idea. So it’s all still fitting.
I’ve been looking forward to this Ann Arbor wedding since Natalie’s first email over a year ago. In case you don’t know where this is going, Natalie and Jesse are flower farmers (and vegetable and chicken and probably other things I don’t even know about yet) at Blue Barn Meadows, otherwise known as their home in Ann Arbor, Michigan. They have the cutest little farm stand out by the road, so for any of you local people, it’s worth the drive on your way home (or to anywhere, really) and you can always check out what’s on the stand on their Instagram stories.
Natalie and Jesse eloped last year in a very special ceremony with their families and then celebrated with a bigger wedding and reception this year on their one year anniversary. Every little detail was touched by someone they know, care for, or by themselves. Flowers were grown on their farm, family and neighbor farms, with centerpieces put together by Natalie and helping hands, with bouquets made by a friend and fellow flower farmer and florist, Finch Florals.
Natalie and Jesse’s wedding day centered around family and friends, their stunning farm, and the most gorgeous blue barn. They got ready in their home, took photos in their backyard and on the trails that surrounded their house, and waited out the rain to have the ceremony of their dreams in the field just next to the barn. I feel like it’s a bit cliché to talk about weather, but this was just one of those days where everything came together in a way you could never even hope for. We had the most dramatic stormy skies for portraits, then the rain started. If you looked at the radar you would’ve thought that was it for the rest of the day, but wouldn’t you know, the skies cleared for their ceremony, and then a second time for sunset portraits. It was just one of those days where Mother Nature was on our side and smiling down.
The best part about all of this, though, is that in just a couple of days I’ll be back on the farm for a session with Natalie and Jesse. There’s so much more to explore on their property and I’m so excited to see more and spend more time shooting them around their property. In the meantime, though, this will just have to hold you over. More flower farm weddings, please!
