COVID-19 has affected everyone in so many different ways, and small businesses have taken a hard hit. My last session of 2020 was February 22 and my business was officially suspended mid-March due to Coronavirus. My winter months are typically pretty slow, so this wasn’t terribly out of the ordinary for March, but my April and May were filled to the brim prior to the stay at home order. My heart goes out to all the couples and families who’ve had to reschedule sessions, celebrations, milestones, elopements and weddings. We will still capture your memories… they will just have a slightly different story than originally planned.
While most of Indiana photographers have been cleared since early May, where I live in Indiana, we were just cleared to reopen on Saturday, the 16th. So to kick things off, I headed out to Rockville for a sweet milestone session we’d originally had scheduled for March. My milestone sessions don’t normally cover first birthdays because by that time these little ones are usually on the move and need the length of a full session to allow us to capture everything, but in this case we made an exception.
Walker just turned one a few days prior, but he was already on the move. I remember Blair telling me he was already pulling himself up and cruising around the house at 10 months, so it wasn’t much of a surprise to show up at their home and see Walker running around like a pro. Blair’s sweet group of friends gifted her and Tim this session to celebrate Walker’s growth – he’s the first baby amongst their friend group and they couldn’t have chosen a more meaningful gift for this family. We shot in their first home, capturing bits and pieces of their life as a family of three.
These sessions always tug at my heart. I tend to be a deeply sentimental person and I think home sessions give so much more to the backstory (and background) of an image. When you look back on lifestyle images in the years to come, you won’t just be looking at the people, but at the room in the background, the photos on the shelves, the tiny toys tucked away into the corner, or the shoes by the door. As you look back on these photos you’ll be able to see life just as it was in that moment in time – how you lived, what you had, where you were, … all of it. And this is why I love these sessions so much.
