It’s officially fall family session season and I couldn’t be more excited about it. My availability was pretty limited this year, and my October booked up well in advance, so those families that made it in before I was booked are that much more special to me. I have some familiar faces this month, and plenty of new ones, too!
I was reflecting on my style of shooting recently while chatting with some clients, and recognized that my family sessions are much more play based this year than in the past. My family sessions have always incorporated movement, but being a mother myself to an almost-toddler who doesn’t sit still AT ALL, it’s made me appreciate movement and play that much more. Family photos can be fun and playful with plenty of movement and motion throughout them. Sure, we can sneak in a few posed shots, but for all those kids who need to run a few laps in between photos, I’m your person. I may even be right there with them, running and scooping and laughing right along with them as I plop them back into your lap for the next few shots. I feel fulfilled when I leave a session smiling (okay, and sweating, too) because we just ran around the park for the last hour and a half. Add in a dog or two and we’re golden and I’m on cloud nine the whole time.
Jennifer and Bill almost didn’t schedule fall family photos this year – they had them done last year and were going to skip a season this fall. They changed their minds at the last minute and snagged an October spot to celebrate Oscar turning two and Daphne and Oscar’s relationship. Oscar was all about puppy kisses and leash holding, point out airplanes as they buzzed overhead, bubbles and jumping. It was my first time meeting this family and I’m so glad we got a chance to adventure together for an evening! I appreciate how special (and sometimes challenging!) it is to include dogs in the family photos. After all, in most cases, they were the original babies! In this case, Bill shared that Daphne was part of the picture before him, even, and he adopted her when he and Jennifer met.
Thanks for having me along
