This session marks my fourth (I think??) time photographing this family and our FIRST EVER time shooting with some sun. The crazy part is, the weather looked iffy all day long and as we walked down to the water for our shoot, it actually started to drizzle on us despite the sun being out. Of course, we battled sweltering heat and humidity (yay, midwest weather), but Quincy and Tyler and Hazel made it look good while I basically melted my face off.
I try to get creative with locations each time I shoot a family. I have my favorite spots, but I also look at what makes the most sense for the subjects. Do we need a lot of space for little ones to run and be free and explore? Are there more adults than littles, making it easier to be by bodies of water? Do we need level paths for little walkers or can we make bigger hikes to more secluded areas? And sometimes it’s just about looking at where we’ve shot before and trying to mix it up a bit. This Eagle Creek Park maternity session marks our first time shooting down by the water, despite having shot at the park three times before. There are just so many options for gorgeous spots to shoot and sometimes I decide based solely on the weather! Most of the water locations at the park really work well in the last 15 minutes to sunset and that’s about it. There isn’t really any tree cover or way to filter the light for longer shooting or for full sessions, but we lucked out with the perfect sky and lighting and got a full milestone session in entirely by the water. And it was dreamy.
Hazel took a bit to warm up to the idea shooting photos after a full day of swimming and a shifted nap schedule to allow for that yummy sunset lighting. After a few quick swings between Quincy and Tyler she was game for just about anything, especially if it included gummies… which it did. The icing on the cake of it all, though, is that I get to see these guys (plus one!) two more times this year. They’re always a favorite family to shoot and I feel spoiled already to get to see them so many times and to meet their newest little addition in just a few months!
