It’s officially fall (as of today if we’re basing things off of the temperatures and weather) and I couldn’t be more excited about it. It means fall colors and clothes, sure, but best of all it means fall locations and skies. There are certain areas I can only really shoot in the fall because of the lighting or the colors, or just the terrain in general, and each year if feels almost like coming home when these spots open up to me again. This Eagle Creek engagement session was my first time this season shooting back out in one of these locations, and it’s a favorite spot of mine to shoot when dogs are along for the ride. It’s off the beaten path and a bit of a hike into, but so worth it, especially as the leaves continue to change.
Emily and Trent are getting married at The Willows on Westfield next June and I’m so excited to be there with them for it all. Shooting engagement sessions with my couples is a great way for me to get to know them – how they interact, what poses and setups work best for them, things they like, and so on. It makes shooting portraits on their wedding day run smoothly and quickly, because let’s face it, sometimes timing is tight and we want to get as much in as quickly as possible! It’s basically a chance to practice together… and it’s also a chance for them to get to know me. Which, like in this case, might mean getting thrown a bit of a wild card when you’re least expecting it. We’re totally done shooting and the sun has set? Think we’re headed back to the car? Nope. Let’s all take our shoes off and get in the water. Who’s game!?
My maternity clients often arrive at sessions fully expecting to step into the water at some point, but with family or engagement sessions the mood (and the lighting) just has to strike me and it’s all very spontaneous. We all treaded lightly on the rocks while I promised them the resulting shots would be worth it and the birds laughed at us (yes, they were laughing at us) in the background. Thanks for being up for any adventure, Emily and Trent!
