Each year I think my schedule will slow down after the fall sessions are wrapped up in early November, and each year I’m always surprised to find myself busy well into winter. But when you live somewhere with such a mild winter, why not!? Of course, let’s be honest, even if I lived somewhere with a colder, snowier winter I’d still be shooting in the winter.
Now, I say all that as if this Dull’s Tree Farm family session was on one of those ‘mild’ days, but don’t be fooled. This day was FREEZING. Taylor gifted this session to her parents for Christmas with the help of her brother, Christopher. She shared with me that within the span of a few months, each of them would be leaving Indiana, a place they’ve called home for the duration of their lives. We scheduled the session for early January, hoping the weather would allow us to fit it in before Christopher headed back to Boston. As I drove up to Dull’s Tree Farm on the day of their session, it started to snow… and maybe even sleet. There was NOTHING on the radar, no sign of precipitation in the forecast, yet here it was snowing. As we each arrived at the farm and stepped out of our cars into the wind to talk things over, I thought for sure they’d want to try again another day. We had gotten the okay from Kerry, one of the owners of Dull’s, to move things to the following day, if needed. The snow died down to a point of being able to shoot and still see their faces clearly in the photos, Jennifer and Jeff declared we should go for it, and so we did.
It turned out amazing. Sure, we were all freezing our butts off throughout the session – I even had to stop and warm my fingers a few times as I was struggling to push buttons – but we powered through and had a great time, too. Families that are able to laugh together are always my favorite to shoot, and these five nailed it in that department. I heard several exclamations of ‘this is so fun!’, something you don’t expect to hear in these temperatures, but you can see the truth in the photos. It was so fun! This was their first time ever having a family session, but you wouldn’t have known it during our session.
To each member of this family, good luck on your journeys in Boston, Denver, and Wisconsin. Thank you for inviting me to capture your group before you head out on your adventures. May your 2020 be filled to the brim with goodness!
