If you don’t live here, then you may not know that October is thee busiest time of year for fall family photography in Indianapolis. In fact, I saw a quote the other day that said ‘October is to photographers, what April is to accountants’ and I had a good chuckle. There couldn’t be anything more accurate about busy season for family photographers. And with all of this rain (and mist and gloom) we’ve been having it’s been hard to get folks in for sessions, but on Sunday morning, the clouds parted, the fog rose from the ground, and I had the more gorgeous family session in perfect fall weather.
This family has spent the last 15 years living in the desert of Texas and was excited to shoot their first family photos back in the midwest (where they’re originally from) in front of some water and some fall foliage. Cue magical music here. Mary had contacted me back in early summer about scheduling a lifestyle session. It’s not too often I get new client inquiries for lifestyle sessions – most of my lifestyle clients are families who have worked with me before and learn more about lifestyle photography through our session or through my site. In this case, Mary and Courtney have a close friend in Texas who has been their photographer for years and are well-versed in lifestyle photography. Before I even had a chance to explain to her how my lifestyle sessions work, she already had her vision put together for what the session would include and sent it my way. Dreeeeaaaammmmm! Lifestyle sessions are my JAM.
This time around, though, we booked what I’ve been calling a ‘hybrid’ lifestyle session. It’s part family/portrait session, part lifestyle session. While my style of photography is very candid regardless of what I’m shooting, I have a different approach to how lifestyle sessions are organized and shot. Lifestyle sessions are typically shot indoors, but can be shot outdoors (on the farm, at the fair, apple or pumpkin picking, getting your Christmas tree, etc!), of if you’re looking for more, we can combine session styles and shoot a hybrid! This gives my clients the best of both worlds (especially when there’s dreamy locations like this nearby that they have access … thanks Chatham Hills!) and works sooooo well for families with littles where attention spans are limited. Yep, you read that right. Longer sessions actually work better for little ones. It gives them time to run around, play, snack, potty, have breakdowns – whatever they need. And then we pick right back up again. There’s no pressure to hurry up or console them quickly when life happens around them!
Anywho, I’ve gotten off topic now. I’m breaking this session into a 2-part blog post because it’s just too.darn.GOOD. I simply can’t limit my sharing on this one. I mean, just look at how gorgeous this family is and then soak in Mom’s styling abilities on top of that. Sigh. Just perfect. I’ll leave you to it. More to come tomorrow!
