My 2020 wedding season started off just this past month with a gorgeous Black Iris Estate Wedding. Winter weddings in Indiana mean it might be 50 degrees or -5 degrees with any form of precipitation falling from the sky… or not. It’s a toss up. For Molly and Fumio’s wedding day, we had a little bit of everything. It was average temperatures until the wind picked up (and nearly blew us all away) and then it was so cold that my hands actually froze to my light stands. You know that old ‘lick a metal pole’ trick? Turns out, there’s no licking necessary if the sky has been spitting everything from mist to sleet to snow, the metal is already wet, and you left your gloves at home. Anything to get the shot, right? When you see it, you’ll know. If they can brave winter in the dark, I will get the shot!
Molly and Fumio opted to save their first look for the aisle, leaving all of their couple portraits for after sunset, so we took advantage of all of the natural light and outdoor spaces during the day. For weddings without outdoor couple portrait time, shooting in the reception space is always my go-to backdrop. It’s perfectly coordinated down to the very last detail, it’s private and away from the guests at cocktail hour, and it makes for dramatic, romantic portraits. In this case, Molly has designed an elegant, gold-accented space with dramatic florals and it was gorgeous to shoot after their ceremony. The team at Black Iris Estate and Thomas Caterers did a phenomenal job with flipping the space quickly to allow for this to happen, and being ninjas in the background as Molly and Fumio savored some time together in the middle of their dance floor.
Not long after their engagement session, Molly shared with me that they were expecting a little one. Molly made the most stunning mama-to-be bride and we took full advantage of her gorgeous Marie Gabriel Couture Gown for some sweet baby bump photos. A tear rolled down Molly’s cheek as she wrapped her arms around her sweet babe and I found myself all choked up behind my camera. Everything was just so serene.
To Molly and Fumio, congratulations to you both on so many parts of life. This year that has barely begun, but will surely be your best yet.
