June was an adventurous month for casey and her camera. I spent 11 days on the road traveling, reminiscing, shooting, visiting, meeting, hugging, kayaking, driving… living. You see, I have this dream of growing beyond Indianapolis family photography and becoming a traveling family photographer. Okay, maybe not for every day of the year, but at least once-a-year and for a good chunk of time. This year was my trial.
On June 12th, I hit the road with a backseat full of quilts, a trunk full of camera equipment and enough underwear to get us through the trip. My lovely assistant (my Mom) rode shotgun and we headed out cross-country with an end goal of exploring my childhood roots in New England.
Our first stop was in Pennsylvania. The skies were threatening, but when I met the Searle family, they were literally up for anything. We headed out into the woods to get some family shots. You see, Kelly is a photographer herself. Which means she has lots and lots of photos of her gorgeous kids, but very few family photos or shots with her in them.
Kelly and I connected through another Pittsburgh photographer and I could not be more grateful that we did. She is an absolutely adorable woman – inside and out. She is everything she looks to be – kind, caring, patient, positive, nurturing… she’s truly inspirational. Not to mention she has amazing taste and her entire family’s wardrobe was just a dream come true.
As we moved from tree-coverage out into the open, the winds were picking up, the thunder was rolling, and the skies were threatening. We worked quickly, getting all of the shots we could before we literally had to run back to the camper out of the rain. We kept our fingers crossed that the storm would pass as quickly as it rolled in and we could finish up with some campfire smores, but the torrential rains pounded on for the rest of the night and we had to call it. Somehow I managed to still deliver just as many images from a full session, and Kelly made it into 98% of them. 😉
Side note – I read this article recently and immediately thought of Kelly and Justin. They have six truly phenomenal kids… and they have each other. Upon meeting them (and Kelly had warned me just how in-love they are) I was wowed by their marriage, their passion, and their dedication. Of course, we made sure to get shots of just the two of them, but what almost brought me to tears, was that sitting on the hillside, behind them, watching all the romance happening, were those six kids. Of course, they started out making gagging noises while watching their parents, but after a couple of seconds I looked back at them and saw looks of admiration on their faces. There is more than enough love to go around in this family and these two are setting an amazingly positive example for their kids of what marriage, love, and relationships look like. <3
And, of course, a true family portrait. 😉
