This year marks my fifth year photographing this family and probably my favorite year, yet. You see, each year we shoot their family photos in January, just in time for their annual Valentine’s Day card they send out. They send their holiday card after the busy card rush for a couple of reasons, but the main one being to celebrate Jeff’s birthday, which falls in February. We’ve had a variety of weather for our sessions over the years, but mostly it’s just been cold. The first year there was a small teaser of snow along the edges of the sidewalks, the second year there was a bit of a dusting that was melting off, the third year there wasn’t any in sight, and last year we finally had some snow, but it was so cold we could hardly stand it… don’t be fooled by how warm they made it all look! Finally, though, this year we had SNOW. And no shortage of it.

We planned our half-indoor, half-outdoor Garfield Park Conservatory family session for Saturday morning and as the storm rolled in, we went with it. We wouldn’t be able to reschedule our permit fo the Conservatory, so we embraced the weather and planned for our outdoor portion to have lots and lots of snow. I texted Lindsay in the morning and asked if they had a sled they could bring along and these might be some of my favorite shots of them yet. The snow just does magical things and I loved chatting with Jason about it while we watched Lindsay and Jeff zip down the hillside after our indoor photos. I feel like this session just fulfills our desire for snow after all of these years.

Of course, the indoor shots are gorgeous, too, and I must say it was nice having so.much.GREEN even for our winter session. This was my first time visiting and shooting at Garfield Park Conservatory and it was so peaceful inside. We had the place to ourselves (likely because of the road conditions) and were able to take our time strolling through and capturing all of Jeff’s favorite poses… both with him in and out of the frame!

Happy birthday, Jeff! Can’t wait to see you all again next year! Hope this year is your best yet!
