I met this family for the first time almost a year ago and this session marks my third time working with them. Every time we’re together, it’s a dream, despite having to battle the weather. For this first session, Quincy and Tyler kept their home open to the outside temps in order to keep tiny little Hazel happy as a clam. Hazel ended up being as peaceful as could be, while the rest of us dripped with sweat. It was all worth it in the end, because a happy baby means a smooth newborn shoot.
I saw them again in the fall for Hazel’s 4-month milestone session. This time around we had awesome weather. Or at least I thought so. It was pretty heavily overcast and I could’ve done with a bit of sun, but moody skies and wind always make for some of my favorite family photos.
So this time around, I thought we had to be in the clear. The forecast looked okay and the radar showed we were in the clear. It was sunny out, so you can imagine my surprise as we showed up on location and the clouds suddenly moved in. We got about 10 minutes of shots in before it started raining. I don’t think it phased any of them one bit. But as the rain came down harder, we jetted back to the cars… only for it to stop as we got there.
Why is any of this even important? Well, because I realized that the weather for our sessions doesn’t matter. Quincy has always stressed to me from the beginning that she loves the candid moments. The memories. It’s about showing up and just being them. So if playing in the rain or dancing in the wind is part of the moment, then they’re game. After all, their journey started with their gorgeously foggy elopement in North Carolina. Check out the photos on the wall behind them in their first session. They’re stunning.
It’s because of this that I always adore their gallery (and why their gallery is always so huge). The love these three have for one another is just overflowing in every image and can be seen and felt in Quincy’s laugh or in Tyler’s adoring gaze or Hazel’s expressive brows. Here’s to hoping for many more sessions with this family and this perfect outdoor cake smash and one year session. Happy birthday, Hazel.
